12 Fun Things to do in Cannon Beach When it’s Raining

So you’ve decided to visit Cannon Beach, yay! But the weather isn’t looking optimal. That’s okay, there are tons of fun things to do in Cannon Beach when it’s raining. We’ve visited Cannon Beach many times but the last time we visited, the weather was cold and rainy most of the time. However, we still spent a ton of time outside and found some fun activities to do indoors to keep cozy. Plus, the coast looked absolutely stunning and we avoided any crowds. We had a blast regardless of the weather and I think you will too.

Rainy Day Activities in Cannon Beach

1. Brave the Cold and Go Outside Anyways!

Unless it is REALLY cold, our favorite rainy day experience in Cannon Beach is to bundle up and get outside anyways. Obviously you don’t want to get yourself caught in any storms. However, if you planned your vacation and it’s turning out to be a rainy day, go outside anyways! The last trip we took to Cannon Beach, it had SNOWED the week before on the beach and it was really cold. But every day we bundled up and headed to the beach and our 1 year old kept begging to go back to the beach all day every day. We loved being outdoors regardless and the rains didn’t last too long.

Also, the rain can help contribute to those moody Pacific Northwest vibes that can be so dreamy and great for pictures. Not to mention, there won’t be many people out exploring if the weather isn’t great. And if you’re lucky, you might catch a rainbow or two.

2. Visit the Tillamook Factory

The Tillamook Factory is always a hit, especially with kids. I mean, who doesn’t love free cheese? You can tour this facility for free which takes you through the process of making cheese. You’ll get free cheese samples and get to browse their selection of souvenirs afterwards. They also have an ice cream shop and a little restaurant if you’re hungry. If you’re heading that direction I would also recommend stopping at the Tillamook Country Smoker Outlet Factory. This is a small hidden gem that sells discounted meat sticks, jerky, and more. They have great prices if you’re looking for road trip snacks.

3. Eat a Delicious Meal at a Restaurant

A rainy day in Cannon Beach is the perfect excuse to go eat a delicious meal at one of the many amazing restaurants there. Some of our favorites are the Wayfarer Restaurant and Lounge for amazing views of Haystack Rock (plus they have great bacon), Cannon Beach Smokehouse for appetizers or charcuterie to share, and Pelican Brewing Company for a fun brewery atmosphere.

4. Shop for Souvenirs Downtown

The main street of Cannon Beach, Hemlock Street, is loaded with cute shops and charm! Check out the souvenir shops, Bruce’s Candy Kitchen for a sweet treat, Four Paws on the Beach or Fetch for your furry friends, Fresh Foods Cannon Beach, or Gepetto’s Toy Shop. Just browse and find whatever suits you. Cannon Beach is also known as one of the best small art towns in the United States, so spend some time browsing the art galleries on a rainy day too.

Fun tip: Oregon has no sales tax – so you can shop and have your money go a little further!

5. Take a Day Trip to Portland

Portland is only 1.5 hours from Cannon Beach and is the perfect day trip for a rainy day. Portland has a ton of fun indoor activities for kids including the following:

  • Ground Kontrol: a classic arcade with tons of pinball games!
  • Powell’s Bookstore
  • Glowing Greens: a black light mini golf course
  • The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry: an indoor hands on science museum that kids will love
  • Portland Children’s Museum
  • North Klackamas Water Park

Portland is a pretty big city so whether you’re looking for amazing food, cool breweries, or some weird shops – Portland will have what you want! They also have a great zoo that is fun to visit, rain or shine.

6. Visit Astoria

Astoria is the cutest old town located on the Northern Oregon Coast. It was founded in 1811 and is the oldest town in Oregon. Some fun things to do in Astoria are:

  • Visit the Astoria Column
  • Walk around town and check out bookstores, art galleries, souvenir shops, and more
  • Get a beer & food at Buoy Beer (they even have a glass floor where you can see sea lions through the floor!)
  • Drink coffee at Coffee Girl – located inside an old cannery
  • Visit Fort Stevens State Park where you can see a shipwreck
  • Play games at Galactix Arcade
  • Hike the Cathedral Tree Trail

7. Drive South Around the 3 Capes Scenic Route

The good news about being in Cannon Beach on a rainy day, is there are tons of cool little towns and attractions to drive to nearby. I would highly recommend heading South towards Cape Meares or even driving the Three Capes Scenic Route to hit Cape Meares, Cape Kiwanda, and Cape Lookout. If you’re going that way (and it’s not too rainy), make sure to pull over at the Neahkahnie Viewpoint for some of the best views of the coast. Some of the highlights in this area are the Octopus Tree, Cape Meares Lighthouse, watch for whales at Cape Lookout, and explore around Pacific City and the unique rock formations at Cape Kiwanda. You can also stop by the town of Tillamook if you’re headed this direction.

If you aren’t going to do the whole loop, just stop by Cape Meares, the Octopus Tree, and hit Roseanna’s Cafe on the way back for some of the best homemade dessert you’ve ever had!

8. Visit the Seaside Aquarium

Okay I’m going to be honest… The Seaside Aquarium leaves something to be desired. However, if you are looking for things to do on a rainy day in Cannon Beach and you’ve run out of options, you might want to check out the aquarium. Seaside is only about 15 minutes North of Cannon Beach. Kids under 5 get in for free, and at the very least they will have fun with the touch tank and checking out the seals. So while I wouldn’t necessarily recommend visiting the Seaside Aquarium on your Cannon Beach vacation, if you have a rainy day you could check it out (for the sake of the kids).

9. Pick Out a New Book

If it’s a rainy day on the Oregon Coast, it’s probably in your best interest to stop by one of Cannon Beach’s bookstores to pick out a new book. You can then cozy up with a cup of coffee and your new book while you enjoy those moody PNW views from your window or bath tub! Cannon Beach Book Company is a woman owned, independent bookstore located along Cannon Beach’s main drag, Hemlock Street. You’ll find a great selection of books here for both adults and kids. If you want to save a little money and buy a used book, check out Jupiter’s Rare and Used Books just up the street. Both are great options depending on what type of books you’re looking for.

10. Eat Ice Cream

Is it ever too cold for ice cream? This family doesn’t think so! Schweitert’s Cones and Candy has a fun ice cream selection and is a candy store (our kiddo loved the big cow couch inside). If you head up North to Seaside, you can also find Sea Star Gelato and Zinger’s Homemade Ice Cream.

11. Cozy up at a Coffee Shop

Cannon Beach has several cute coffee shops that are perfect for a rainy beach day. A cup of coffee in a cozy coffee shop is definitely one of the best things to do in Cannon Beach when it’s raining. My absolute favorite coffee shop in Cannon Beach is Sleepy Monk Coffee Roasters. They have delicious coffee and pastries as well as a really cool interior, although it is small inside so plan ahead if you’re going to stay and hang out for a bit. Sea Level Coffee and Bakery is also a really cool coffee shop with more of a modern vibe that you can park at while you read your new book!

12. Relax in your VRBO or Hotel

If you have a great hotel room or a cozy vacation rental, it can be fun to just hang out inside and wait out the bad weather. We loved our cozy cabin rental with a delicious cup of coffee and one of our favorite board games. This airbnb was so cozy and perfect – find it here!

We hope you enjoyed this list of things to do in Cannon Beach when it’s raining! Whether you are looking for indoor activities in Cannon Beach, or what to do in the Spring in Cannon Beach – these are all of our favorites.
