A Tall Tall Tree is actually a book we purchased from the gift store when we visited Sequoia National Park. Anthony D. Fredericks writes a ton of great nature books for kids. So if you enjoy this one, make sure to check out some of his other books. If you’re looking for a counting book, this is a great Sequoia National Park book to read. This book takes you through several unique varieties of trees as a landscaper grandfather teaches his granddaughter. The “Who Pooped in the Park” book series is a fun one that you can both learn from, and get a few giggles from! These books are really educational and fun to learn about the wildlife in the area and how to identify them from only their tracks (both scat and tracks!)

6. Oliver: The Second-Largest Living Thing on Earth

This cute kids’ book is about the largest living things on earth, the Sequoias.  Oliver is the second-largest living thing on earth and is bummed out about the lack of recognition he gets next to the only one bigger than him, General Sherman.  Fortunately, Oliver isn’t alone and realizes that being second isn’t as bad as he initially thought.  Our boys and us loved this story and would highly recommend reading it before visiting the Sequoia National Park with kids!

The Tree Guardian is a story about a girl named Frala who lives in the Sequoia Forest.  Frala is destined to become her village’s leader some day.  Although she is praised by the village elders as a good leader, she has doubts and seeks the guidance of the tree guardians.  Not only does this tale teach a valuable lesson about nature and leadership, it’s also filled with beautiful pictures of the Sequoia Forest throughout the book with a few interesting facts about sequoia trees at the end.

9. Secrets of the Sequoias: Adventures with the Parkers

Written by Mike Graf, Illustrations by Joyce Mihran Turley

Secrets of the Sequoias follows the Parker family throughout their vacation in Sequoia National Park. It’s a realistic family vacation story which highlights the major attractions of the area as well as some of the safety precautions (like being bear aware).

This book would be good for older kids and adults, and I would recommend reading it after your vacation. Then you can relive the fun at all the same spots they visited. There is also some interesting history that both kids and adults can learn from this book.
