The Rolling Huts Review: A Fun Stay in Winthrop, Washington

The Rolling Huts
The best way I can describe the Rolling Huts is modern, minimalistic, and nature focused. They are truly one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed.
The idea for the huts was to be a modern alternative to camping – and it really does fit that vibe. They were designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects in Seattle!

Where are the Rolling Huts Located?
They are located in the Methow Valley which is right at the foothills of the North Cascades. They are more specifically located in Winthrop, Washington which is one of the coolest towns in Washington with TONS of easy and epic hikes nearby. The town has a full western theme and it’s such a fun place to visit for families.
It’s quite literally the perfect gateway town to stay in for visiting North Cascades National Park in Washington. From the Rolling Huts, you’ll only have less than 10 minutes to reach Mazama which is a great starting point for your day in North Cascades National Park.
How Much Do They Cost?
Cost varies depending on the season but ranges between $100ish to around $350 per night. The more expensive range is for renting the farmhouse on the property (more info on that below) and the cheaper end of the range is for the bunkhouses available (also more info below).
Middle of the range is for the actual Rolling Huts, but there are a ton of options for this property so it varies. You’ll also pay more during the high season, summer and events.

Getting There: Winthrop and the Methow Valley
The Methow Valley includes Twisp, Mazama, and Winthrop. It’s located in Central Washington on the North side of the state.
There are so many fun things to do in Winthrop and the Methow Valley. It’s a great place for an outdoorsy vacation for families and the perfect gateway town for exploring North Cascades National Park.
If you’re flying into the area to visit the Cascades, you will likely fly into Seattle or Spokane! Both cities are about 3.5 hours from Winthrop.
Inside the Hut: Layout, Beds, & What’s Included
The inside of the hut is pretty minimalist, but actually really cool. The huts can sleep four people, but they sleep two people more comfortably.
There is a comfy bed near the entrance of the hut and there are a couple of benches in the main living area that can be put together for another bed.
You’ll need to bring your own sleeping bags or bedding if you have more than two people sleeping in the huts.
In the main living area is also one of our favorite features of the huts – a cozy wood fireplace! You can use it to heat the huts in the chilly weather.
In the kitchen area, you’ll have access to a coffee pot, mini fridge, microwave, and just a few basic dishes. As I said before, it’s pretty minimalistic but that’s totally the vibe and we loved it.
Lastly, another favorite area of ours in the huts was the deck. You’ll have a beautiful and peaceful area where you can enjoy a cup of coffee while you listen to the birds (or you might even see some deer like us!)
What to Expect When Visiting With Kids
Our kids were actually obsessed with the huts and we can see why! They are such a fun and memorable place to stay. The rest of the property has a ton of room to roam for the kids and even a walking path through the forest.
The only challenge we would have had if our kids were a little older would be the sleeping situation. The main bed is very easy and comfortable, but the other bed you can set up is not super big and it’s a pretty hard surface to sleep on.
Tip: you’ll have to bring your own bedding for the second bed. A sleeping bag and a foam pad or something comfy would work great.
Amenities
The Rolling Huts are pretty basic when it comes to amenities, but it’s meant to be similar to a camping (but more like glamping!) We felt like we had everything we needed for our two night stay.
- Portable toilets attached to each hut
- Full bathrooms and showers in the bathhouse nearby
- Sauna in the bathhouse
- WiFi (although you probably don’t need it here with all the beautiful nature around!)
- Pizza restaurant on site
- Community barbecue and picnic tables
- Walking path into the forest
- Mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and hot water heater
Each hut has their own bathroom. It is a porta potty but it’s designed in a way that makes it look much more classy than your normal portable toilet.
When we visited, they were super clean and we had absolutely zero issues. But just be warned that if you are expecting a normal hotel style bathroom, that’s definitely not the case here.
However, if you’re against using the convenient portable toilet, they do have conventional bathrooms and showers just nearby in the main bathhouse area (also where the sauna is located).
There is some WiFi available, but with the peaceful atmosphere you hopefully won’t even want it!
Where to Eat in Winthrop
Winthrop has a ton of fun places to eat and a lot of kid friendly options. One really convenient place to eat is the pizza restaurant that is actually at the Rolling Huts. If you don’t feel like driving or heading into town, it’s a great spot for dinner.
Another favorite of ours is the Old Schoolhouse Brewery in Winthrop. The patio has corn hole and chalk and places where kids can get some wiggles out while they wait for food. Plus, the beer is great!
Also don’t forget to get ice cream in downtown Winthrop at Sherri’s Sweet Shoppe – they have over 20 homemade flavors.
And lastly, DEFINITELY check out the Mazama Store. They have some great deli options as well as breakfast sandwiches and coffee. And it’s just an absolute must visit when you’re hanging out in the North Cascades.
Rolling Huts Pros & Cons
The Rolling Huts are a great and affordable place to stay when visiting Winthrop and the North Cascades.
There are so many pros! From the unique design to the peaceful property it’s such a beautiful place to stay. The sauna, pizza restaurant on site, and the cozy wood stove were our favorite parts.
The only con I can really think of for the Rolling Huts is the sleeping arrangement if you have more than 2 people. It’s definitely doable and still worth it, but might not be the most comfy!
Who’s it For (and Who Should Skip it)
If you have more than 4 people in your group, the huts won’t work for you unless you reserve more than one hut. However, they do have a farmhouse on site as well that works for a bigger group.
They also have smaller little bunkhouses you can stay in that are very bare bones (but great location)! And they are even more affordable.
Final Verdict: Are the Rolling Huts Worth it?
